Ligament is taught alongside tendon in the topic of support and movement, and the two terms are the pair most often confused on exam scripts, so questions frequently test this distinction directly by asking candidates to state the difference between them. A ligament is an elastic band of connective tissue joining one bone to another across a joint, and its main function is to hold the bones in the correct position and limit how far the joint can move, preventing dislocation during normal activity. Unlike a tendon, a ligament does not transmit muscular force; its role is purely structural and stabilising. In Paper 1, a ligament is often tested through a simple matching or multiple-choice item pairing the structure with its correct definition, while Paper 2 may ask candidates to explain why a joint becomes unstable after a ligament is torn. A frequent error is writing that a ligament connects muscle to bone, which is the definition of a tendon, or claiming that ligaments cause movement; ligaments restrict and stabilise movement rather than producing it, since they contain no muscle tissue and cannot contract. Because ligaments have a relatively poor blood supply compared with muscle, candidates should also know that a torn ligament tends to heal more slowly than damaged muscle tissue, which is a detail sometimes included in extended structured answers about joint injuries. This structural role also explains why athletes who twist a joint suddenly, such as during a change of direction while running, are especially prone to ligament injuries, since the sudden force can exceed what the elastic tissue is able to stretch and recover from safely.
