In the syllabus and the exam
The trachea is studied as the first structure air meets after the throat on its way to the lungs, and its features are tested through structure-function reasoning rather than simple recall. Candidates need to explain that the cartilage rings keep the airway permanently open so breathing is never obstructed, that the lining of ciliated cells and mucus-secreting goblet cells traps dust and microbes before they reach the delicate alveoli, and that the cilia beat to sweep trapped particles back up towards the throat to be swallowed or expelled. A typical exam question shows a cross-section of the trachea and asks candidates to identify the cartilage, the ciliated epithelium and the mucus layer, then link each to a specific protective or mechanical function; simply stating that it lets air through, without describing the supporting and cleaning roles, is treated as an incomplete answer.

Rings of cartilage in the trachea's wall stop it from collapsing when air pressure inside drops during a deep breath.
