SPM Biology at a Private or International School

Two different starting points

A private national-curriculum school follows the same KSSM syllabus as a government school, teaching toward the same SPM subjects, including Biology, but is privately funded and often runs smaller classes. Its students prepare for SPM Biology largely the way a government-school student does, just inside a different institution.

Paper 1 is objective, 40 objective questions in 1 hour 15 minutes. Paper 2 is the written paper at 100 marks over 2 hours 30 minutes, in three parts: Section A: 60 marks with 8 questions (answer all), Section B: 20 marks, and Section C: 20 marks.

Paper 3 is the practical, with 5 minutes planning and 40 minutes answering, assessing science process skills. Behind all three is the KSSM syllabus, 28 chapters across Form 4 and Form 5, built from 113 content standards, and none of it changes with the school a candidate attends, so preparation can be planned against a target that stays constant.

Building the KSSM syllabus from outside the school day

For a student whose school does not teach the national syllabus, SPM Biology has to be constructed deliberately rather than absorbed in class. A sensible order follows the syllabus itself: the Form 4 chapters first, which establish cell biology, biological molecules, transport and the main body systems, then the Form 5 chapters, which build on them through inheritance, physiology and ecology.
