What Paper 1 tests

Paper 1 is a written objective paper. It tests recall and understanding across the whole KSSM syllabus using multiple-choice and multiple-combination items, so a wide, accurate memory of terms and definitions is rewarded.

The paper is worth 40 marks out of the whole Biology grade. Because each item carries one mark and the topics jump from chapter to chapter, small gaps in your knowledge show up directly as lost marks rather than being averaged away inside a longer answer.

The two item types you will meet

Paper 1 uses two objective item types. Most are multiple-choice items, where four options labelled A to D follow the question and exactly one is correct.

The rest are multiple-combination items, which list numbered statements and ask which combination of them is correct.

A multiple-combination item is really a set of true-or-false judgements packed into one question. Read each numbered statement on its own and decide whether it is true, then choose the option that lists exactly the true statements.

Marking each statement true or false in the margin before you look at the options stops one doubtful statement from pulling you toward the wrong combination.

How the syllabus is sampled

Paper 1 draws from the whole KSSM course, 28 chapters across Form 4 and Form 5, built on 113 content standards. No chapter is left out, so a weak topic shows up as marks you cannot recover elsewhere.

Items are written across four thinking levels: remembering a term, understanding a concept, applying it to a new situation, and analysing data or a diagram. The paper follows a difficulty balance of 5:3:2 (low:medium:high), so most marks sit at the lower and middle levels.

Steady, accurate recall of the basics earns more than chasing a handful of hard items ever could.

How to approach Paper 1

  1. Read every option before choosing; the best answer is often the most precise one.
  2. Eliminate clearly wrong options first to improve your odds on hard items.
  3. Watch for "not", "except" and "most likely", they change what the question asks.
  4. Do not leave blanks; there is no penalty for a wrong answer, so make your best choice.
  5. Keep to roughly a minute per question and return to marked ones at the end.

Reading diagram and data items

Some items give a labelled diagram, a graph or a short table and ask you to read information from it rather than recall a plain fact. Study the figure, its labels, axes or headings before you look at the options, because the correct answer usually turns on one detail inside the figure.

For a graph, check what each axis shows and its units, then trace the exact value the item asks about. For a diagram of a structure, identify the labelled part first and recall its function, since the options often pair a correct part with a wrong function to catch a hurried reader.

A worked objective item

Item. A student put equal cubes of raw potato into water baths at 20°C, 40°C, 60°C and 80°C, added hydrogen peroxide to each, and measured the volume of gas released in one minute. The volume was greatest at 40°C and almost zero at 80°C.

Which statement best explains the result at 80°C? A.

All the hydrogen peroxide had been used up. B.

The enzyme catalase had been denatured. C.

Oxygen is less soluble at a high temperature. D.

The potato cells had become turgid.

Answer: B. Potato contains the enzyme catalase, which breaks hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. At 80°C the high temperature denatures the enzyme: its active site changes shape and can no longer bind the substrate, so almost no oxygen is released.

Option A is wrong because fresh hydrogen peroxide was added to every bath; C names a real effect that is far too small to explain a drop to nearly zero; D is irrelevant to the volume of gas produced. Reading every option and linking the result to enzyme structure is what separates B from the distractors.

Revision that suits an objective paper

Because Paper 1 rewards accurate recall across every chapter, active recall beats re-reading notes. Turn each topic into questions you answer from memory, define the term, label the diagram, state the function, and check only afterwards, so you practise retrieving rather than recognising.

Working through past objective items under a clock does two jobs: it builds the speed the timing needs, and it shows which chapters still cost you marks. Treat each wrong answer as a repair list, return to that content standard, fix the idea, and re-test it a few days later so it holds.
