Human reproductive organs and their functions
The male reproductive system produces and delivers sperm through the testis, sperm duct and penis, while the female system produces eggs and supports fertilisation and pregnancy through the ovary, oviduct, uterus, cervix and vagina.

The male and female reproductive systems each have organs specialised for producing gametes and, in the female, for supporting fertilisation and the development of a foetus.
In the male, sperm are made and then carried along a series of tubes to be deposited in the female. In the female, an egg is released each cycle, may be fertilised, and if so is held and nourished as it develops.
Exam questions usually give a labelled diagram and test whether you can match each organ to its precise function rather than to a vague idea of reproduction.

Each reproductive organ is shaped for its part in producing gametes, bringing them together, or protecting a developing foetus.

Gamete production depends on meiosis: cells in the testis and ovary divide by meiosis to form sperm and eggs that each carry half the normal number of chromosomes, so that fertilisation restores the full number. The ovary and testis also act as endocrine glands, releasing hormones that control the reproductive system.
The menstrual cycle prepares the female body for pregnancy: oestrogen from the ovary repairs and thickens the uterus lining and triggers ovulation, while progesterone maintains that lining. If the egg is fertilised in the oviduct, the embryo travels to the uterus and implants in the thickened lining; if it is not fertilised, the lining breaks down and is lost during menstruation.
