How to read the result

Each question in the key checks one visible feature at a time, such as the presence of a backbone, the type of skin or body covering, or how the animal breathes, and a "Yes" or "No" answer sends you down a different branch until only one group is left.

The order of the questions matters: broader features that separate large groups, such as having a backbone at all, come before finer details that separate related groups from each other, such as scales versus feathers. This mirrors how a dichotomous key is meant to work in the exam, always start from the most general division and narrow down one step at a time.

Because each question only has two possible answers, a wrong answer partway through does not stop the key from finishing, it simply leads to the wrong group at the end, so it is worth going back to the first question you were unsure about if the final group looks obviously wrong for your organism.

What it does not do
