Does my child have to write SPM Biology essays in English?

This is the first question parents in George Town ask us, and the answer settles a lot of anxiety. The SPM Biology paper is set bilingually, with each question printed in Bahasa Melayu and English, and a candidate may answer in either language.

A student who thinks in BM can write the whole of Paper 2 in BM and lose nothing for it.

The reason families in the Timur Laut district still ask us for English essay coaching is practical. Most reference books, revision videos and the textbook glossary that the student meets after Form 5 lean on English terms, and a student heading into science courses later finds the English vocabulary waiting for them.

Where do the marks in a Biology essay actually sit?

Parents worry that weak English grammar will cost marks. In Biology essays, the mark scheme awards points for scientific content: a named structure, a correct process, a stated effect.

A sentence with a grammatical slip that still names the stoma, the guard cells and the change in turgor earns its points. A beautifully written sentence that says "the leaf breathes out water" earns nothing.

That is why the coaching starts with the science words, not with grammar drills.

Paper 2 carries 100 marks, and its essay sections in B and C together account for a large share of them. A student who can produce short, correct, term-rich sentences in English is already competitive, and our guide to Paper 2 shows how each section is weighted.

How do our lessons pair BM terms with English ones?

The teacher keeps a two-column term sheet for each chapter, built during the lesson rather than handed over in advance, so every entry is attached to a moment the student remembers. The student says the BM term aloud, the teacher writes the English beside it, and the pair is used in a sentence straight away.

What does an essay sentence frame look like, and why reuse it?

A student who is more comfortable in BM benefits from a small set of English sentence frames that carry science content without needing new grammar each time. The teacher introduces one frame per lesson and the student fills it with different chapters until it is automatic.

The frames stay simple on purpose; the science words do the work.

• "When X happens, Y increases, so Z." Used for anaerobic respiration: when oxygen is absent, lactic acid builds up in the muscle, so the muscle becomes fatigued.
• "A is adapted for B because it has C." Used for the alveolus: the alveolus is adapted for gas exchange because it has a thin wall one cell thick.
• "First, then, finally." Used for the immune response: first the antigen is detected, then lymphocytes produce antibodies, finally the antibodies bind to the antigen.
• "This is important because." Used to close a paragraph with the consequence, which is often a separate mark.

How does an essay get built inside a lesson?

The essay-building sequence in a lesson on immunity runs like this.

1. The student explains the immune response in BM, out loud, with no writing, so the teacher hears what the student actually knows
2. The teacher writes the English terms on the shared screen as they come up: antigen, antibody, lymphocyte, vaccine, immunity
3. Together they lay out the essay plan as a list of markable points, one per line, in English
4. The student writes the essay in English using the frames, while the teacher watches and stops only for a missing term
5. The essay is scored against the point convention on screen, and the student rewrites the two weakest sentences before the call ends

What should the student do between lessons?

Homework for this theme is short and repetitive by design. The student writes one essay paragraph in English on the chapter just covered, using the frames and the term sheet, and sends a photo on WhatsApp before the next lesson.

The teacher marks it in the first part of the following session. Alongside this, the student reads the same page of the textbook in BM and then in English, and looks up any term that appears in only one language in our trilingual glossary.

For Paper 1, where answers are objective, the student practises reading the English half of the question first and the BM half second, so the English phrasing becomes familiar without any risk: if the English is unclear, the BM version is on the same page.

What does it cost, and how does a George Town family begin?

Lessons start from RM50 an hour and the rate depends on the teacher's experience; we quote it on WhatsApp once we know the student's form and how comfortable they currently are writing in English. Each lesson is booked one at a time, so a family keeps going for as long as it is useful.

The first step is a paid one-hour trial lesson at the teacher's rate, arranged on WhatsApp through the trial page.
