Producer
An organism, usually a green plant, that makes its own food by photosynthesis.

In the syllabus and the exam
A producer is always the first organism in a food chain and the only trophic level that converts non-living energy (sunlight) directly into chemical energy stored in food, through photosynthesis; candidates should specify 'green plant' or 'photosynthetic organism such as algae or phytoplankton' rather than the vague word 'plant' alone, since not all plants photosynthesise equally and some organisms that photosynthesise, such as certain bacteria and algae, are not plants at all. Because producers are the only trophic level not dependent on eating another organism, questions often ask candidates to explain why an ecosystem cannot function, or a food chain cannot exist, without at least one producer at its base. A frequent error is placing a producer anywhere other than the very start of a food chain, or describing a producer as something that 'produces oxygen' as its defining exam-relevant feature instead of its role as the base of the energy pathway, which is what trophic-level questions are actually testing. Candidates should also be able to identify producers correctly in unfamiliar ecosystems, including aquatic ones where the producer is not an obviously plant-like organism, such as phytoplankton or algae in a pond or ocean food chain, since exam diagrams increasingly test this less familiar context rather than only land-based examples like grass or trees. Some exam scenarios also introduce chemosynthetic bacteria, which produce food using chemical energy rather than sunlight, as producers in unusual ecosystems such as deep-sea hydrothermal vents, testing whether candidates rely on the general definition rather than assuming light is always required.
Example
Phytoplankton in the ocean and grass on land are both producers, using light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose by photosynthesis, forming the entry point of energy into almost every food chain.
