The format behind Paper 1
Paper 1 has 40 objective questions worth 40 marks, answered in about 1 hour 15 minutes, and every item is marked dichotomously, simply right or wrong. The items are either standard multiple choice or multiple-combination questions, where several statements are given and you choose the combination that is entirely correct.
Across past papers, this format has stayed fixed, and the questions move from testing straightforward recall up to applying and analysing information, so the whole paper is not just memory.

How to drill Paper 1 efficiently
- Time yourself at roughly a minute or two per item so the pace matches the real paper.
- For multiple-combination items, mark each individual statement true or false before looking at the answer options.
- When a diagram question is missed, redraw and relabel the whole diagram rather than only correcting the one part.
- Group your practice by pattern type for a session, then mix patterns together in a later full timed set.
Common mistakes
How difficulty is spread across the paper
Past papers follow the official difficulty ratio of 5:3:2 (low:medium:high), so most items reward accurate recall and straightforward understanding, while a smaller group demand application and analysis. The harder items are not saved for the end, a demanding data-interpretation or multiple-combination item can appear early, so reading time is best spread evenly rather than assuming the paper gets steadily harder.
The cognitive demand climbs from remembering and understanding toward applying and analysing. An item may show an unfamiliar organism, a novel graph or an experimental result you have not met, and ask you to reason from principles you already know.
Treating every item as pure recall leaves those application marks unclaimed.
How the syllabus is sampled
Because each item carries one mark and the paper spans all 28 chapters across Form 4 and Form 5, past papers sample the syllabus widely rather than dwelling on a few favourite chapters. Any content standard can become an objective item, which is why broad, even coverage beats deep revision of only a handful of topics.
Some topics lean toward particular formats: cell structure and the organ systems recur as diagram-identification items, while enzymes, transport across membranes and ecology recur as data-interpretation items. Noticing which topics tend to appear in which format lets you rehearse the matching skill for each area instead of revising every chapter the same way.
A worked multiple-combination item (in the style of Paper 1)
Question. Which statements about active transport are correct? I It moves substances against a concentration gradient.
II It uses energy released by respiration. III It slows when a cell is deprived of oxygen.
A I and II only B I and III only C II and III only D I, II and III.
Working. Judge each statement on its own. Statement I is correct, active transport moves substances up the gradient.
Statement II is correct, the energy comes from ATP made in respiration. Statement III is correct, without oxygen, aerobic respiration falls, the ATP supply drops, and active transport slows.
All three are true, so the answer is D. Testing each statement separately before combining avoids the trap of stopping at the first pairing that looks reasonable.
