The role of Sections B and C
Section B and Section C each present a choice of essay questions, and you answer one fully worked essay per section rather than attempting every option. Each essay is worth 20 marks and is marked analytically against a scheme of points, in the same way Section A is, but the answer is longer and more self-directed, you decide how to organise the points rather than filling in given blanks.

How to plan an essay answer
- Read the whole question first and note every sub-part and its mark allocation before writing anything.
- Jot the marking points you plan to cover in the margin, in the order you will write them.
- Allocate your time roughly in proportion to the marks, do not spend equal time on a 4-mark part and a 12-mark part.
- Write in full sentences using correct biological terms, since essay marks are still awarded point by point.
- Include a diagram only where the question calls for one, and label it as carefully as any other part of the answer.
Common mistakes
How essay marks are built up
Both essay sections are marked analytically, point by point, against a scheme, the same principle as Section A, but across a longer, self-organised answer. Each distinct, correct biological point earns its own mark, so an essay that states ten precise points scores more than one that develops three points at length.
Past papers show that repetition, however well written, does not add marks.
Marks within an essay are usually weighted toward the parts that demand explanation or application rather than simple recall. A part that asks you to name or state a structure carries fewer marks than one that asks you to explain a mechanism or relate structure to function, so the marks themselves signal where to spend your writing.
Which topics suit which essay format
Reading across past papers, certain topics are examined again and again through the same essay format. Physiological processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, digestion and the transport of substances tend to appear as process-explanation essays.
Paired concepts such as mitosis and meiosis, arteries and veins, or the nervous and endocrine systems tend to appear as comparison essays.
Application topics, the effect of a lifestyle factor on a body system, or the role of a biological process in food production or conservation, tend to appear as discussion essays. Grouping your revision by the format a topic usually takes lets you rehearse the right answer shape rather than only memorising the content.
A worked essay plan (in the style of Section B)
Question. Explain how the structure of the leaf is adapted for photosynthesis, and describe how a leaf obtains the raw materials it needs. Include a labelled diagram in your answer.
Model plan. Open with the raw materials: carbon dioxide, water and light energy absorbed by chlorophyll. Structure points: the broad, flat lamina gives a large surface area for light absorption; the thin shape shortens the diffusion path; the palisade mesophyll near the upper surface is packed with chloroplasts; the spongy mesophyll has air spaces for gas exchange; the stomata let carbon dioxide diffuse in; the xylem delivers water and the phloem removes sugars.
Close the raw-materials part by linking each material to its transport route. A labelled cross-section of the leaf earns the diagram marks.
Each bold term is a separate marking point, so listing them precisely matters more than long prose.
