What happens in the first hour

1. The teacher checks where your child stands on the current Form 5 topic and, briefly, on a related Form 4 topic it depends on, since the two are rarely separate at this level.
2. New content is taught with worked examples specific to Form 5's harder areas, genetics problems, plant transport, ecological relationships, rather than a general run-through of the chapter.
3. A past-style question is attempted and marked against the scheme, covering either the new topic or a Form 4 topic due for revision, so both stay exam-ready.
4. For genetics, the teacher works through a Punnett grid and ratio calculation step by step, then has your child repeat the method alone to confirm it holds without support.
5. The lesson ends with a clear split for the coming week, which is new learning and which is revision, so nothing gets crowded out as the exam approaches.

Form 5 is learning and revising at once

The hard part of Form 5 is doing two jobs together: learning new chapters like leaf structure, transport in plants and inheritance, while keeping Form 4 fresh for the exam. Class time rarely allows both, so students often let Form 4 fade.

One-to-one lessons balance the two. The teacher teaches the new Form 5 chapters and folds in Form 4 revision through past-style questions, so nothing is forgotten by the time the papers arrive.

A useful way to picture it: part of the lesson goes to the new topic, say, transport in plants, and part to a Form 4 topic due for revision, chosen because it appeared in a recent past-style question your child struggled with. Neither is sacrificed to the other.

Lesson planning also shifts across the year: more time teaching new Form 5 content early on, moving toward full past-paper practice under timed conditions as the exam date gets closer.

What a lesson looks like

Lessons cover the new Form 5 chapters at your child’s pace, then reinforce them with exam-style recall and marked answers.

As SPM nears, lessons shift toward full-paper technique: Paper 2 essay planning and Paper 3 science process skills.

As Paper 3 approaches, lessons work through practical write-ups the way the actual assessment is marked: stating a hypothesis precisely, identifying variables correctly, and writing an inference that follows from the results rather than restating them.

Genetics lessons follow a fixed method, define the alleles, set up the cross, complete the Punnett grid, then state the ratio, repeated until your child can produce it independently under time, not only when guided.

What we cover

All 13 chapters of Form 5, plant tissues, leaf, plant nutrition and transport, responses in plants, plant reproduction, biodiversity, ecosystem, inheritance and variation, plus genetics problem practice.

Exam preparation across all three papers, with Form 4 revision woven in.

Form 5's plant chapters (leaf structure, transport, plant responses and reproduction) are taught alongside their Form 4 counterparts, cell structure, transport in animals, since Paper 2 essay questions often connect the two rather than testing them in isolation.

Inheritance and variation gets dedicated problem-solving time beyond the textbook examples, because a Section C essay question can turn entirely on a genetics cross a student has only practised once before.

Paper 1 revision across the full two-year syllabus resumes closer to the exam, cycling through Form 4 and Form 5 content in short recall bursts rather than one long re-read of both years' notes.

Managing revision and new learning together

The exam year works best with a fixed weekly split rather than reacting to whichever topic feels urgent: a block of time for whatever Form 5 chapter is current, and a separate block for cycling through Form 4 topics so none of them are left untouched for months.

Genetics is worth practising as a skill, not a topic to re-read, working through a new cross from a blank page, start to finish, three or four times, is what makes the method hold up under exam time pressure.

As past-year-style papers start appearing in self-study, timing them properly, 2 hours 30 minutes for a full Paper 2 attempt, matters as much as getting the content right, since running out of time on a known answer costs the same mark as not knowing it.

A rotating checklist of Form 4 chapters, ticked off one or two a week alongside current Form 5 learning, prevents the common pattern of Form 4 fading silently until a past-year paper reveals the gap.

In the final months, alternating which paper gets attention from week to week, Paper 1 recall one week, a timed Paper 2 section the next, a Paper 3 write-up after that, tends to work better than finishing one paper's practice completely before starting another, since all three are tested on the same day.
