What a draw-and-label question is actually assessing
A question that directly asks for a structure to be drawn and labelled, a leaf cross-section, the human eye, an animal cell, is being assessed on two separate things: whether the outline shows the structure's parts in roughly correct proportion to each other, and whether each required label is placed correctly and named with the exact term. Marks for the outline and marks for the labels are usually independent, so a correct outline with a missing or wrong label does not earn full marks, and a set of correct labels attached to a poorly proportioned outline does not either.
This is different from using a diagram as supporting evidence inside a longer written answer, where the diagram exists to illustrate a point already being made in prose. A draw-and-label question is itself the answer, worth marks in its own right, so the outline and the labels need the same care that a written answer would get.
Draw a proportionate outline with clean, single lines
- Use a single continuous line for each edge of the structure rather than several short, sketchy strokes, a marker looking for a labelled part needs a clear boundary to reference.
- Keep the relative sizes of the different parts roughly correct, a structure that is meant to be small relative to the rest of the diagram should not be drawn disproportionately large just because it is the one carrying most of the labels.
- Use a sharp pencil so lines stay thin and precise, since a thick or smudged line can make it unclear exactly where one part ends and another begins.
- Do not add shading, colour, or decorative detail unless the question specifically asks for it, the outline is being assessed for structural accuracy, not artistic presentation.
Rule every label line, and never let two lines cross
Every label line should be drawn with a ruler, touching the exact point on the structure it identifies rather than stopping near it or floating close to the outline without making contact. A label line that does not clearly touch its intended part leaves it ambiguous which structure the label is naming, and an ambiguous label is easy for a marker to reject even when the term written is correct.
Label lines must not cross one another. Where several structures sit close together, this usually means planning the direction each label line will travel before drawing any of them, so that a line meant for a part on the left does not have to cross a line meant for a part on the right.
A crossed label line makes it genuinely unclear which line is pointing to which structure, and that ambiguity is resolved against the candidate, not in their favour.
Spell the exact term correctly and keep labels legible
The label written at the end of each line needs to be the precise biological term for that structure, not a general description of what it looks like or does, naming a structure by its function alone where a specific term exists usually does not earn the same credit as the term itself. Spelling matters here in a way it may not elsewhere, since a misspelling that changes or obscures the intended word can cost the mark even when it is clear what was meant.
Write each label horizontally, at the end of its line, rather than at an angle following the line's direction, a label that has to be tilted to be read slows down a marker checking it against the mark scheme, and a slower, less certain read works against the candidate.
Checklist before submitting a diagram answer
How do you show magnification or a scale when a question asks?
Some draw-and-label questions ask for more than an outline and labels, they ask for magnification or a scale. Magnification is worked out as the size of the drawing divided by the actual size of the specimen, with both measured in the same unit before dividing, and it is written as a number with a multiplication sign, such as x2, rather than with a unit.
Where a scale is asked for instead, a labelled scale bar drawn beside the diagram, showing what a stated length on the page represents in real size, communicates the same information and is quick to add.
A biological drawing of an actual specimen also follows a few conventions worth applying: give the drawing a title stating what it is, draw it large enough to show the required detail, use clean continuous lines with no shading, and make sure the proportions match the specimen in front of you rather than a remembered textbook image.
