Why the first read is a separate step from answering
Many marks are lost not because a concept was misunderstood, but because part of the question stem was skimmed past rather than actually read. A stem often contains information the answer is expected to use directly, a labelled diagram, a set of results in a table, a specific organism named in the first sentence, or units already given for a value, and skipping straight to writing an answer means working from a guess at what the question said rather than what it actually said.
Treating reading as its own step, separate from planning and writing, protects against this. The habit is simple: read the whole stem once for a general sense of what it is about, then read it again slowly, this time marking anything that looks like it will be needed in the answer.
What to look for on the second read
- The organism or system named in the question, an answer about a plant cell where the question specifies an animal cell, or vice versa, will not match what was asked, even if the biology described is otherwise accurate.
- Any data already provided, numbers in a table, a labelled axis on a graph, or a value given in the stem, since these often need to be used directly in the answer rather than re-derived or ignored.
- Units attached to given values, since a question that gives a measurement in minutes but expects an answer in seconds (or the reverse) is testing whether the units were actually read.
- Phrases that point back to a specific diagram or table, such as "based on the diagram above" or "using the results in Table 1", these signal that the expected answer must reference what is shown, not general knowledge of the topic.
- Any condition stated only once, early in the stem, that applies to every sub-question that follows, for example, a temperature or concentration set in the introduction that is easy to forget by the time a later sub-part is being answered.
A short worked example
Consider a stem that reads: "Diagram 3.1 shows a section of a leaf. The experiment was carried out at a temperature of 25°C over a period of 30 minutes." A rushed first read might register only "leaf" and "experiment," missing that the temperature and duration are conditions later sub-questions may depend on, and that any answer describing structures must refer to what Diagram 3.1 actually shows rather than a generic leaf diagram from memory.
A careful second read picks out the organism context (a leaf, not a whole plant), the fixed condition (25°C, 30 minutes) likely to matter for a later question about rate, and the instruction to work from the specific diagram provided. None of this requires extra biology knowledge, it requires slowing down enough to register what the stem actually states.
Building the habit under timed conditions
How do command words change what a question is asking for?
Reading the stem carefully includes reading the instruction verb, because the command word sets how much and what kind of answer earns the marks. Two questions on the same topic can demand very different responses: one asking you to 'state' a function wants a single short phrase, while one asking you to 'explain' the same function wants a reason linking cause to effect.
Answering an 'explain' question with a bare statement, or padding a 'state' question with a paragraph, both cost time or marks.
- State or name: give a short, exact answer with no explanation, often one term or one phrase.
- Describe: say what happens or what is seen, in sequence, without needing to give the reason.
- Explain: give the reason or mechanism, usually linking a cause to its effect with 'because' or 'so that'.
- Compare: give paired points covering both things on the same feature, not two separate descriptions.
- Suggest: apply your knowledge to an unfamiliar situation where there may be more than one acceptable answer.
- Calculate: show the working and give the final value with the correct unit.
How much time does careful reading actually leave you per question?
Careful reading only feels affordable once you know the clock you are working against. Mapping the marks onto the minutes shows that most items give you enough time to read twice and still answer, provided you do not overwrite the short ones.
- Paper 1: 40 objective questions in 1 hour 15 minutes, worth 40 marks, a little under two minutes each, so a second read of the stem still fits.
- Paper 2: 2 hours 30 minutes for 100 marks, budget reading time in proportion to the marks a question carries.
