- Where a process has steps, present them in the correct order, since sequence itself is often part of what is being assessed.
- Close by directly answering the question asked, especially for "discuss" or "compare" questions that expect a clear final position.
- Avoid long introductory or concluding paragraphs that only restate the question, that space is better used for another marking point.
Use precise biological terms and labelled diagrams
The exact biological term usually earns the mark where a general description does not, for example, naming diffusion, osmosis or active transport specifically rather than describing movement in vague terms. Where a diagram supports the answer, label it clearly with straight lines and the correct terms; an unlabelled or mislabelled diagram loses marks even when the surrounding written explanation is accurate.

A worked Section C answer, point by point
Question. The small intestine is the main site for the absorption of digested food. (a) Describe how the structure of the small intestine is adapted for efficient absorption.
(b) Explain what would happen to a person whose small intestine lining had far fewer villi than normal. [Section C: 20 marks]
Model answer. (a) The small intestine is very long, which gives a large surface area for absorption. Its inner lining is folded into millions of villi, and each villus is covered in microvilli that increase the surface area further.
The wall of each villus is one cell thick, so the diffusion distance is short. Each villus contains a network of blood capillaries that absorb glucose and amino acids, and a lacteal that absorbs fatty acids and glycerol.
A rich blood supply carries absorbed food away and keeps a steep concentration gradient. (b) With far fewer villi, the surface area for absorption falls, so less digested food is absorbed.
More nutrients leave the body unabsorbed in the faeces, so the person may lose weight and show signs of malnutrition even while eating normally.
Notice that the answer is a chain of separate, named points, each of which could be ticked against a marking scheme, rather than one flowing paragraph. Part (a) uses describe, so features are listed with no reasons; part (b) uses explain, so each effect is tied to its cause.
