How SPM Biology marks are awarded
Marks in Paper 2 are awarded for specific marking points, usually signalled by keywords. An answer scores when it contains the right point in clear words, not simply for being about the right topic.

Marking points, not effort
SPM Biology answers are marked against a scheme of set points. Each point is worth a mark, and an examiner looks for the correct idea expressed clearly.
Writing more does not earn more marks; hitting each point does. This is why a focused answer beats a long, vague one.
Where marks are commonly lost
- Using a near-synonym instead of the exact term the scheme wants.
- Giving the observation without the reason in an "explain" answer.
- Missing a marking point because the answer stops short of the full process.
- Contradicting an earlier correct point later in the same answer.
How to write for the marks
- Work out how many marks the question is worth and aim for that many distinct points.
- Use the precise biological term every time, spelling that changes the meaning can lose the mark.
- For processes, give the steps in the correct order.
- Read your answer back and check each sentence earns something.
Analytic and dichotomous marking
Not every paper is marked the same way. Paper 1 is marked dichotomously: each objective item is simply right or wrong, so there are no part-marks and an eliminated guess can still score.
Paper 2 is marked analytically, point by point against a scheme, so one answer can pick up a mark for each correct idea it contains.
Paper 3, the practical, is also marked analytically, but against the science process skills rather than recall, a testable hypothesis, correctly named variables, a properly headed results table, a suitable graph, and an inference drawn from the data. Knowing which style applies tells you where care pays off: accuracy of reading in Paper 1, and the completeness of each point in Papers 2 and 3.
Reading the mark allocation
The number in brackets after a Paper 2 question is a direct instruction about how many points to make. A part worth [1] wants one correct point; a part worth [3] wants three distinct ones.
Treat the allocation as a checklist and make sure your answer holds as many separate ideas as there are marks.
- Count the marks before you write, and plan that many distinct points.
- Do not repeat the same idea in different words, a repeated point scores only once.
- If a part is worth more marks than you have points, you are probably missing a step or a reason.
- For a process, each correct step in the right order can be a separate marking point.
Keywords and the marking scheme
The scheme lists the exact words or ideas that score, and the examiner checks your answer against that list. A near-synonym may not be accepted: writing that a substance 'goes into' a cell is weaker than 'is absorbed' or 'diffuses into', and 'gets bigger' is not the same marking point as 'the cell becomes turgid'.
Definitions carry set phrases that each earn a mark. A definition of osmosis, for example, is expected to include 'net movement of water', 'partially permeable membrane' and the direction from higher to lower water potential; leaving one out usually leaves a mark behind.
Worked example: reading the marks
Question. The diagram shows a person quickly moving a hand away from a hot object. (a) Name the type of action shown. [1] (b) Explain how this action protects the body. [3]
Model answer. (a) A reflex action. (b) The response is rapid because the impulse travels along a short reflex arc that does not wait for the brain, so the hand is pulled away before serious damage is done to the skin.
The three separate ideas, speed, the short pathway that bypasses the brain, and preventing harm, each match one of the three marks.
How practical marks are awarded
In Paper 3 the marks follow the quality of each science process skill you show. A hypothesis scores when it states a testable relationship between the manipulated and responding variables; the variables score when the manipulated, responding and controlled variables are each named correctly.
The results table scores for correct headings with units and a sensible layout; a graph scores for labelled axes, a suitable scale and accurately plotted points; and the inference scores when the conclusion genuinely follows from the data you recorded rather than from memory.
