Using the Right Biology Keywords in Answers
A correct idea only earns its mark in SPM Biology if it is expressed using the specific keyword the marking scheme expects, so choosing the precise biological term over an everyday equivalent, and spelling it correctly, matters as much as understanding the concept itself.

A marking scheme lists keywords, not paraphrases
Each marking point in a SPM Biology scheme is usually written around one or two specific keywords, a named process, structure, or relationship, and a marker checks an answer against that expected word rather than judging whether the general idea feels right. An answer that describes "water moving into the cell because there is less water outside" may be circling the correct idea without ever naming osmosis, and a marker working through the 8 questions (answer all) structured questions in Section A has little room to award a mark for an idea that never appears in recognisable biological language.
This is why two candidates who clearly understand the same concept can score differently: one writes the keyword the scheme is built around, the other writes around it. The gap is rarely about knowledge, it is about whether the exact expected word made it onto the page.
Near-synonym pairs that are easy to mix up
- Diffusion, osmosis and active transport, all move particles, but only one applies depending on whether water or a solute is moving, and whether energy is used against a concentration gradient.
- Respiration and breathing, respiration is the chemical release of energy inside cells; breathing is the physical movement of air into and out of the lungs. Using one where the question means the other loses the mark even though both are "about oxygen".
- Digestion and absorption, digestion breaks food into smaller molecules; absorption is those molecules moving into the blood or lymph. A question about the ileum usually wants absorption, not digestion.
- Growth and development, growth is an increase in size or cell number; development is a change in complexity or form. Questions on humans or plants sometimes need both named separately.
- Gene and allele, a gene is a unit of heredity for a characteristic; an allele is one specific version of that gene. Genetics answers that swap the two lose precision marks even when the working is otherwise correct.
Spelling and word form protect the mark you already earned
A misspelling that still clearly points to the intended term is usually accepted, but a spelling that turns one biological term into a different term is not, for example, changing "ileum" into "ilium" names a hip bone instead of part of the small intestine. Keeping consistent spelling of a term throughout an answer also matters, since a marker reading a shifting spelling may doubt whether the correct concept was actually understood.
Word form matters too: "respire" is a verb, "respiration" is the process, and a sentence that mixes them up can obscure whether a step or an outcome is being described. Reading the keyword back in the exact form used in the textbook and in past structured questions, noun, verb, or adjective, is a habit worth building well before exam day.
Building a personal keyword list while revising
- Go chapter by chapter and list the two or three terms most likely to be confused with each other, not every term in the chapter.
- Write a one-line distinguishing feature next to each pair, rather than a full definition, so the difference is what gets memorised.
- Practise spelling each term from memory, since recognising a spelling as correct on a printed page is not the same skill as producing it correctly under exam conditions.
- Test the list by writing one structured-question answer using each pair correctly, then check it against the textbook wording.

How do command words change which keyword you need?
The keyword you must reach depends on the command word at the start of the question. 'State' or 'name' wants the single correct term with nothing extra; 'describe' wants the term plus what is observed or happens; 'explain' wants the term plus a reason, usually a because-clause.
Reading the command word first tells you how much of the keyword's meaning the marker expects to see.
'Compare' is the one most often answered wrongly. It asks for both sides in the same sentence, using linking words such as 'whereas' or 'while', so 'arteries have thick walls whereas veins have thin walls' scores, but two separate statements may not.
Matching the depth of your keyword to the command word keeps you from writing too little for an 'explain' or too much for a 'state'.

How do keywords work in essay answers?
Section C essays are marked by adding up separate marking points, and each point is tied to a keyword just as in a structured question. An essay written in confident but general prose can read well and still score below one that names each process, structure and substance directly, because the marker can only tick points that are actually stated.
This means keyword planning helps most in essays. Listing the terms a topic needs before you start writing, then checking them off as each appears, turns a vague plan into a checklist of marks.
For a Section C: 20 marks essay, reaching the expected keywords in a clear order matters more than an elegant introduction.
