SPM 2027 Biology: The Two-Year Candidate Guide
A student sitting SPM Biology in 2027 is in Form 4 now, with a little over a year of teaching and one full revision cycle ahead. The two-year map has four stages: finish Form 4 with a complete chapter file by December 2026, use the year-end break to preview Form 5, teach and revise in parallel through 2027, and move to timed past papers once all 28 chapters are covered. Lembaga Peperiksaan publishes the 2027 timetable closer to the year; the calendar is updated when it does.

Where does an SPM 2027 Biology candidate stand right now?
In September 2026, a candidate for SPM 2027 is in Form 4, somewhere in the second theme of the syllabus. The first theme, Fundamentals of Biology (Chapters 1–7), is behind them; the second, Physiology of Humans and Animals (Chapters 8–15), is being taught now and runs to the end of the year.
Form 5's 13 chapters come in 2027, followed by the school trial examination and the SPM papers at the end of that year.
That position has an advantage most Form 5 students would pay for: time to make Form 4 solid before Form 5 stacks on top of it. The chapters being taught now are the ones examined through labelled diagrams and sequences, and the ones already taught are the ones Form 5 leans on.
What the candidate does between now and December decides how heavy 2027 feels.
This guide is the two-year map. The companion posts go deeper on each stage: the Form 4 foundation year, the December transition, and the term-by-term plan.
Key facts for the SPM 2027 Biology candidate
The exam structure is stable from year to year, so a 2027 candidate can plan around the paper format now even though the dates are not yet published. The 2026 registration window is included as a reference only: it shows the time of year to expect the 2027 window, and school candidates are registered through their school in any case.
The format overview describes the three papers in full.
- Subject code: 4551
- Syllabus examined: 28 chapters, 15 chapters in Form 4, 13 chapters in Form 5, across 113 content standards
- Papers: three papers
- Paper 1: 40 objective questions, 40 marks, 1 hour 15 minutes
- Paper 2: 100 marks in 2 hours 30 minutes; Section A: 60 marks, Section B: 20 marks, Section C: 20 marks
- Paper 3: practical test (Ujian Amali); 5 minutes planning then 40 minutes answering
- Question difficulty ratio: 5:3:2 (low:medium:high)
- SPM 2027 timetable: published by Lembaga Peperiksaan closer to the year
- Registration reference: for the 2026 sitting, school candidates registered 1 March – 20 April 2026 (school candidates, online via SPPAT); the 2027 window is announced by Lembaga Peperiksaan
What does the two-year map look like, term by term?
The map front-loads the work that only the Form 4 year can do well: learning each chapter properly the first time and recording it in a form that can be revised from later. Stage 3 is where the two years meet, and it works only if Stage 1 produced a usable file.
Stage 4 mirrors the final months every SPM cohort goes through; for the 2027 cohort, its dates will be set by the timetable when it is published.
| Stage | When | Chapters | Main job | Output by the end |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Finish Form 4 | Now to December 2026 | Ch. 8–15 taught; Ch. 1–7 revised | Keep pace with school; build a chapter file | One-page summary and diagram set for all 15 chapters |
| 2. Transition | December 2026 break | Ch. 3, 5, 6, 7 revisited; Ch. 16–17 previewed | Consolidate the Form 4 chapters Form 5 depends on | Score sheet for Form 4; first look at plant physiology |
| 3a. Form 5, first half | Early 2027 to mid-year | Ch. 16–22 taught; Ch. 3, 5–7, 12, 15 retrieved | Two-track lessons: new chapter plus Form 4 retrieval | Plant diagram set; Paper 3 planning answers for plant experiments |
| 3b. Form 5, second half | Mid-2027 to trial exam | Ch. 23–28 taught; Ch. 4, 6, 8–11, 13–14 retrieved | Finish the syllabus; start timed practice | Genetics problem bank; first full timed papers |
| 4. Revision to exam | Trial exam to SPM 2027 | All 28 chapters by weakness | Timed papers, mistake log, Paper 3 first | Per-chapter score sheet with no chapter missing |
What should be finished in 2026, before Form 4 ends?
The rest of 2026 has two aims. The first is to learn Chapters 8–15 as they are taught, with the diagrams drawn and the sequences written out within a week of each chapter ending.
The second is to go back over Chapters 1–7 so that the cell-level mechanisms are still sharp in December. Both aims fit into a weekly rhythm: school pace on the current chapter, plus a fixed revision slot that always looks one chapter back.
The output to aim for by December is a chapter file: a one-page summary for each of the 15 chapters, the diagram set drawn unaided, a Paper 3 planning answer for each Form 4 suggested experiment, and the year-end examination marks broken down by chapter. The Form 4 complete guide lists the chapters, the diagrams and the experiments in full.
- Chapters 8–10 (respiratory, digestive, circulatory): alveolus, villus and heart diagrams; comparison tables across organisms
- Chapters 11–12 (immunity, coordination): antigen-to-antibody sequence; reflex arc; hormone table
- Chapters 13–15 (homeostasis, support, reproduction): nephron diagram; negative feedback loops; joint and antagonistic muscles; menstrual cycle graph
- Chapters 1–7 revisited: osmosis and active transport explanations; enzyme graphs; mitosis and meiosis stages; respiration equations
- Form 4 experiments rewritten in Paper 3 planning format
How should the December 2026 break be used?
The break between Form 4 and Form 5 is short, and it is the only stretch in the two years with no new teaching. Used well, it does two things.
It turns the year-end examination into a per-chapter score sheet, so the candidate knows which Form 4 chapters are secure, shaky or missing before Form 5 starts. And it gives a first look at Chapters 16 and 17, so that plant tissues and leaf structure are recognisable rather than new when school begins.
A workable pattern is short daily sessions rather than long days: one Form 4 chapter revisited from the summary sheet and its diagrams redrawn, then twenty minutes reading ahead into the plant theme. The transition post gives a day-by-day version.
How does 2027 run once Form 5 begins?
Form 5 teaching in 2027 follows the three themes in order: plants (Chapters 16–22), ecosystems (Chapters 23–25) and genetics (Chapters 26–28). Each plant chapter reuses a Form 4 mechanism, each ecology chapter rewards precise vocabulary and reasoning, and each genetics chapter is a procedure to be practised on paper.
The Form 5 complete guide covers each theme and its experiments.
The way to keep both years alive at once is a two-track week. The main track is the school's Form 5 chapter, taught with its diagrams and its suggested experiments.
The second track is a short retrieval block on a Form 4 chapter chosen to line up with the main track: Chapter 7 before photosynthesis in Chapter 17, Chapter 6 before inheritance in Chapter 26, Chapter 12 before plant responses in Chapter 20. By the trial examination, both tracks have covered the whole syllabus once.
| 2027 period | Form 5 chapters taught | Form 4 retrieval alongside | Practice added |
|---|---|---|---|
| Term 1 | Ch. 16–19 | Ch. 3, 5, 6, 7 | Diagram sets; Paper 3 planning for plant experiments |
| Term 1 (late) | Ch. 20–22 | Ch. 12, 15 | First timed Paper 2 Section A block |
| Term 2 (early) | Ch. 23–25 | Ch. 8–11 | Ecology calculations; one essay a week |
| Term 2 (mid) | Ch. 26–28 | Ch. 4, 6, 13–14 | Genetics problem bank; first full timed papers |
| Trial exam onward | Revision by weakness | Merged into revision | Timed papers; mistake log; Paper 3 first |
When should a 2027 candidate start past papers?
Past papers are most useful when the material they test has been taught, so the answer is staged rather than a single date. Chapter-level questions from past papers can begin in Form 4 as soon as a chapter is finished; they are the best way to learn what a Form 4 structured question looks like.
Timed Paper 1 sets covering Form 4 chapters can start in the December 2026 break, once the whole of Form 4 has been taught.
Timed blocks of Paper 2 Section A questions belong in the first half of 2027, as each Form 5 theme is finished. Full timed papers, all three, belong after the last Form 5 chapter and before the trial examination, so that the trial and the past papers together produce the score sheet that drives the final months.
Paper 3 practice at the paper's exact structure should be well established before the trial, because Paper 3 is the first paper sat.
In every case, a past paper counts only when it is marked and the mistakes are logged by chapter. Checking your answers and how marks are awarded explain what to look for when marking.
- From now: chapter-level past-paper questions for each finished Form 4 chapter
- December 2026: timed Paper 1 sets on Form 4 chapters
- First half of 2027: timed Paper 2 Section A blocks per finished Form 5 theme; Paper 3 format practice
- After the last Form 5 chapter: full timed papers, all three, before the trial examination
- Trial to exam: timed papers by weakness, with a mistake log
Where will the SPM 2027 dates come from, and what can be planned now?
The SPM 2027 timetable has not been published. Lembaga Peperiksaan releases the timetable closer to the year, and the registration window for school and private candidates is announced in the same way.
For reference, the 2026 sitting registered school candidates during 1 March – 20 April 2026 (school candidates, online via SPPAT) and private candidates during 1 March – 30 April 2026 (private and repeat candidates); late registration 1–15 May 2026, and the 2026 written papers fall in the final weeks of the year. A 2027 candidate can expect a similar shape, with the exact dates confirmed by the timetable.
What can be planned now is everything that depends on structure rather than dates: the order of the papers, with Paper 3 sat first; the 2 hours 30 minutes of Paper 2 and how to pace it; the 5 minutes planning at the start of Paper 3; and the two-year sequence above. The SPM Biology calendar is updated when the 2027 timetable is published, and the countdown tool switches to the 2027 dates at the same time.
How do our one-to-one lessons fit a two-year run?
Our lessons are online, one-to-one and in English, taught by experienced Biology teachers. For a 2027 candidate starting now, the lessons follow the map above.
Through the rest of 2026, each weekly lesson covers the current Form 4 chapter on a shared whiteboard, with diagrams drawn live, plus a retrieval check on an earlier chapter and marked exam-style questions. In 2027, the lesson runs the two-track structure, and from the trial examination onward it becomes a revision session built on the student's marked scripts.
Everything drawn and marked in a lesson is saved and sent afterwards, so by the exam the student has a two-year file of annotated diagrams, model answers and marked work. Because the SPM paper is bilingual, teachers pair the Malay term with the English one for every key structure and process.
Lessons start from RM50 per hour; the rate depends on the teacher's experience and is quoted on WhatsApp. The first lesson is a paid one-hour trial at the teacher's rate, booked through the trial page.
Form 4 tuition describes the current year and Form 5 tuition describes 2027; starting tuition early explains why some families begin in Form 4.
What should a 2027 candidate have in hand at each checkpoint?
The two-year run has three checkpoints where a physical file shows whether the plan is on track. In December 2026, the Form 4 chapter file: summaries, diagrams, experiment planning answers and a per-chapter score sheet from the year-end examination.
At the 2027 mid-year, the plant theme file: plant diagrams, Paper 3 planning answers for the plant experiments, and Form 4 retrieval notes for Chapters 3, 5, 6 and 7. At the trial examination, the full syllabus file with the genetics problem bank, marked essays and the first full timed papers.
A candidate who reaches each checkpoint with the file complete enters the final months of 2027 with the same routine every strong SPM candidate has: timed papers, a mistake log, Paper 3 first. The study planner maps the weekly slots across both years, and the syllabus pages track each content standard as it is secured.
- December 2026: Form 4 chapter file complete; score sheet from the year-end examination
- Mid-2027: plant theme file; Form 4 retrieval notes for Chapters 3, 5, 6, 7
- Trial examination 2027: full syllabus file; genetics problem bank; marked essays; first full timed papers
- Final weeks: per-chapter score sheet with no chapter missing; Paper 3 format automatic
