SPM 2027 Biology: A Two-Year Study Plan

A student sitting SPM Biology in 2027 has six school terms left: three in Form 4 during 2026 and three in Form 5 during 2027. This plan assigns the 28 chapters to those terms, adds a revision layer that runs a term behind the teaching, and starts full past papers in the second term of Form 5. The SPM 2027 dates are published by Lembaga Peperiksaan closer to the year and will appear on our calendar.

Part of the complete guide: SPM 2027 Biology: The Two-Year Candidate Guide

What does the two-year map look like?

The Biology syllabus is 15 chapters in Form 4 and 13 chapters in Form 5, taught in order by the school across six terms. A two-year plan has three layers running at once: the teaching layer, which follows the school; the revision layer, which revisits each chapter one term after it was taught; and the exam layer, which starts as Paper 1 drills in Form 4 and becomes full timed papers in Form 5.

The table below shows all three by term.

The exact SPM 2027 timetable is not yet published; Lembaga Peperiksaan releases it closer to the examination year, and our calendar will list the Biology dates when it does. The plan therefore ends at the final school term rather than at a date, and the last block is stretched or trimmed once the timetable is known.

Form 4, 2026: how do the three terms run?

Term 1 establishes the habits that carry the rest of the plan. Each chapter gets a one-page summary sheet written by the student the week the school finishes it, and every diagram in the chapter is drawn once from the textbook and once from memory.

The exam layer is light: ten objective questions per chapter, marked, with wrong answers traced back to the summary sheet.

Term 2 brings the chapters with the most experiments: enzymes, cell division and respiration. Each school experiment is written up in the form Paper 3 expects, with variables, hypothesis, table and graph, and kept in a single file.

The revision layer starts here, retesting Term 1 chapters with a short Paper 1 set so that cells and membranes stay current while enzymes are being learnt.

Term 3 is the longest stretch of content, covering the human systems from respiration to reproduction. One labelled diagram per system, the alveolus, the villus, the heart, the neuron, the nephron, is the minimum; each becomes a Section A structured question in the final exam.

The end-of-year examination is the checkpoint, and our post on the Form 4 foundation year lists what should be secure by then.

What happens in the December break between the years?

The break between Form 4 and Form 5 is the one period in two years with no new teaching, and the plan uses it for two jobs. The first is repair: the three Form 4 chapters that scored lowest in the end-of-year examination are reworked from the summary sheets, with a fresh Paper 1 set at the end.

The second is preview: the first Form 5 chapters on plant tissues and leaf structure are read once, so that the Form 5 teaching starts on familiar ground. Two Paper 3 practice sets keep the practical skills warm.

The full detail is in our post on the Form 4 to Form 5 transition.

Form 5, 2027: when do full papers start?

Term 1 of Form 5 covers plant physiology, and the revision layer now interleaves Form 4 material by theme: osmosis is revisited alongside transport in plants, enzymes alongside nutrition in plants, cell structure alongside plant tissues. The exam layer moves to a weekly Section A set and the first Section B essay written under time, since the essay sections carry Section B: 20 marks and Section C: 20 marks and take longest to learn.

Term 2 is when full papers begin. With most chapters taught, the student sits a complete Paper 2 under its 2 hours 30 minutes once in the term, then again near the end, and a full Paper 1 with 40 objective questions in 1 hour 15 minutes between them.

Paper 3 practice becomes fortnightly. This is also the term of the school's own examinations, and the results from those are the first reliable reading of which paper needs the most work.

Term 3 covers inheritance, variation and genetic technology, the last chapters taught, and runs straight into the final revision block. The revision layer becomes a whole-syllabus cycle by cluster; the exam layer becomes weekly full papers and weekly Paper 3 sets.

Once the SPM 2027 timetable is published, the last weeks are re-planned around the actual dates using the same approach as our 2026 weekly plan.

How does the revision layer stop chapters from fading?

The weakness of a two-year syllabus is that Form 4 material is nearly two years old by the final exam. The revision layer counters this with spacing: each chapter is retested one term after it is taught, again in the December break or the following term, and a third time in the whole-syllabus cycle of the last term.

Three spaced retests, each a short Paper 1 set or a single structured question, keep a chapter current for far less effort than relearning it in the final months. Our post on spaced repetition for Biology explains the schedule in detail, and the study planner can hold the retest dates.

  • First retest: one term after the chapter is taught, using ten Paper 1 questions
  • Second retest: in the December break for Form 4 chapters, or the next term for Form 5 chapters, using one structured question
  • Third retest: in the whole-syllabus cycle of the final term, using a full cluster set

How much time does the plan take each week?

In Form 4 the plan asks for about three hours of Biology a week outside school: one for the summary sheet and diagrams, one for the retest and the experiment write-up, one for the Paper 1 drill and its review. In Form 5 that rises to five or six hours, with the extra time going to full papers and essays.

Both figures fit around the other SPM subjects, and the Form 5 hours are the same as any student would spend in the final year; the difference is that the Form 4 hours have already done part of the work.

Where do our lessons fit across the two years?

A weekly one-to-one online lesson runs alongside all three layers. In Form 4 the lesson follows the school's chapter, checks the summary sheet and the diagram, and marks the Paper 1 drill.

In Form 5 the lesson becomes the marking hour for full papers and essays, with the teacher choosing the next week's focus from the marked work. Our experienced Biology teachers teach one-to-one, online and in English; rates start from RM50 per hour and vary with the teacher's experience, and the first hour is a paid trial lesson at the teacher's rate, arranged on WhatsApp.

The Form 4 and Form 5 tuition pages describe each year's lessons.

Frequently asked questions

When should a 2027 candidate start full past-year papers?
In the second term of Form 5, once most chapters have been taught. Before that, Paper 1 drills and Section A structured questions on the chapters already covered give the exam practice without asking about untaught material.
Are the SPM 2027 Biology dates known yet?
Not yet. Lembaga Peperiksaan publishes the SPM 2027 timetable closer to the examination year. Our calendar page will list the Biology dates once released, and the final block of this plan is adjusted to them.
What if the school teaches the chapters in a different order?
Follow the school's order for the teaching layer and keep the revision and exam layers a term behind whatever was taught. The plan's structure is the three layers, and the chapter assignments move with the school.
How many Paper 3 practice sets should a student do over the two years?
Around thirty: every Form 4 experiment written up in exam form, two in the December break, fortnightly sets in Form 5 Term 2 and weekly sets in Term 3. The practical paper rewards a fixed routine more than any other paper.
