Why do Form 4 students decide they hate Biology?
Parents in Puchong, in the Petaling district of Selangor, describe the moment in similar terms: the child liked Science in Form 3, chose the pure science stream, and within a term of Form 4 announced that Biology was boring and impossible. When we look at the student's work, the cause is nearly always the same.
The early chapters on cell structure, cell organisation and movement of substances across the plasma membrane went past too fast, the student memorised the words without a picture behind them, and every chapter after that used those words as if they were understood.
By the time the class reaches enzymes or the digestive system, the student is being asked to explain how a substrate fits an active site, or how glucose is absorbed through the villus, using ideas of concentration gradient, diffusion, osmosis and active transport that were never made real. A subject in which nothing connects is a subject that feels like a list, and a list is boring.
The dislike is a symptom of a gap, and the gap is in two chapters.
What do the first four lessons rebuild?
Our teacher starts at the cell, not at whatever the school is teaching that week. The first lesson draws an animal cell and a plant cell from scratch on the shared screen, with the student drawing alongside, and attaches one job to each organelle with one concrete example: the mitochondrion as the site of aerobic respiration, which is why muscle cells have so many.
The student ends the lesson with a labelled drawing they made themselves and a reason for every label.
Lessons two to four rebuild the plasma membrane and the three ways substances cross it. Diffusion is shown with the smell of food reaching the next room; osmosis with a potato strip in salt water and the same strip in plain water; active transport with root hair cells taking up mineral ions against the gradient, which is why roots need oxygen.

How do those two chapters connect to everything else?
Once the membrane is real, the teacher shows the student where it reappears. This is the lesson that changes how the student feels about the subject, because it turns a list into a structure.

What does a lesson look like for a student who is reluctant?
The lesson is short on lecture and long on drawing. The teacher explains for a few minutes, then the student draws, labels, or explains back.
A student who has decided they hate the subject will not sit through forty minutes of talk, but will draw a cell if asked, and will answer "so what would happen to a red blood cell in pure water?" if the question is put directly. Each hour has at least three moments where the student produces something and sees it marked correct.
Homework after these lessons is one drawing and one short written explanation, never a page of questions. The drawing is photographed and sent on WhatsApp; the teacher returns it with corrections before the next lesson.

How does the teacher keep pace with school at the same time?
The rebuild takes four to six lessons, and the school moves on during those weeks. The teacher handles this by linking the school's current chapter back to the rebuild wherever possible.
If the school is on the digestive system while the student is on lesson three, the osmosis lesson uses the villus as its example, so the student meets the school's chapter through the membrane they are rebuilding. After the rebuild the lessons move to the school's chapter and stay a week or two ahead of it.

What do parents notice first?
These appear before the marks move. A test score improves one or two chapters after the rebuild, once the student has had time to apply the rebuilt ideas to new material.
- The student draws diagrams without being asked, because the drawing is now the way they think about the topic
- The word "boring" is replaced by specific complaints, such as "I keep mixing up hypotonic and hypertonic", which are solvable
- Homework for Biology gets done before other subjects rather than last
- The student explains something from the lesson at dinner, usually the potato or the red blood cell
