Confusing genetic diversity with species diversity in an answer.Genetic diversity concerns variation within one species; species diversity concerns the number of different species present.Check which level the question asks about before answering, and give an example that matches that level exactly.
Describing biodiversity's importance only by listing species without explaining stability.The exam rewards an explanation of why more species and genes make an ecosystem more resilient, not a list alone.Explain that greater variety gives an ecosystem more ways to cope with disease, change or the loss of a species.
Saying all microorganisms cause disease.Most microorganisms are harmless or beneficial, such as decomposers that recycle nutrients; only some species are pathogens.Give one beneficial example, such as yeast or a decomposer bacterium, alongside one pathogenic example.
Describing a virus as a typical living cell.A virus has no cytoplasm and cannot carry out its own metabolism; it depends entirely on a host cell to reproduce.State that a virus is not a cell and can only multiply inside a living host cell.
Saying a virus is a type of bacterium.A bacterium is a complete, living, single-celled organism, while a virus is a non-living particle without cytoplasm.State clearly that a bacterium and a virus differ in cell structure and in how, or whether, they reproduce independently.
Assuming Malaysia's high biodiversity is only about having many rainforest species.The exam expects mention of multiple habitat types, such as mangrove forest and coral reef, contributing to the total.Name at least two different Malaysian habitats when explaining why the country is described as megadiverse.
Giving the taxonomic levels out of order or omitting one.Missing or misordering a level, such as forgetting 'order' or swapping 'class' and 'order', loses marks even if the rest is correct.Practise reciting all seven levels in the fixed order using a mnemonic until it is automatic.
Building a dichotomous key using a feature that is hard to observe, such as internal anatomy.A workable key should use directly observable external features so that anyone can apply it without specialist tools.Choose visible features, such as the number of legs, presence of wings or shape of a leaf, for each pair of statements.

How to avoid these mistakes

  • Practise writing scientific names in the correct format, checking capitalisation, word order and italics every time.
  • Work through and then build your own dichotomous key for a set of five or six familiar organisms.
  • Compare viruses and bacteria in a table covering cell structure, genetic material and the ability to reproduce.
  • List the three levels of biodiversity with one correctly labelled example of each from a local habitat.
  • Memorise the seven levels of classification in order, from kingdom down to species, using a mnemonic.
  • Explain, in your own words, why an ecosystem with more species is generally more stable than one with fewer.

Frequently asked questions

How do you write a scientific name correctly?
A scientific name has two parts, the genus and the species. The genus name starts with a capital letter and the species name is all lower case, and the whole name is written in italics (or underlined when handwritten). For example, the human is Homo sapiens, with a capital H for the genus and a lower-case s for the species. Even a small formatting error, such as a misplaced capital letter, still counts as a mistake even if the organism itself is correctly identified.
What is a dichotomous key?
A dichotomous key is a tool used to identify an organism. It presents a series of steps, each offering two contrasting statements about a feature, such as 'has wings' or 'has no wings'. You choose the statement that matches your organism and follow it to the next pair, repeating until you reach the organism's name. A good key is designed so that anyone can follow it without needing prior detailed knowledge of the organism.
Are viruses living or non-living?
Viruses sit on the boundary between living and non-living. They are not made of cells and cannot carry out life processes or reproduce on their own. However, once inside a host cell they can take over the cell's machinery to make copies of themselves, so they show one feature of living things, reproduction, only when inside a host. This debate over a virus's status shows that the definition of 'living' in biology is not always simple or clear-cut.
